As the retired president and laboratory director of the Hematology and Oncology Medical Group of Fresno, he has made significant contributions to both the practice and teaching of medicine. Dr. Flam’s expertise and dedication have not only benefited his patients but also the medical community at large through his published medical papers and co-authored textbooks.
Dr. Flam’s professional journey is marked by notable roles beyond his primary practice. He served as the director of hematology and oncology at a regional Air Force hospital and was a medical consultant to NASA, where he instructed astronauts for Project Skylab in Houston, Texas. Following this, Dr. Flam contributed his knowledge as an instructor at the department of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and later as an associate clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco’s School of Medicine. These roles underscore his commitment to advancing medical education and research.
Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Flam has been recognized as an expert in hematology and oncology. His professional affiliations reflect his standing in the medical community, including being a fellow of the American College of Physicians and holding memberships with several prestigious organizations, such as the Association of Northern California Oncologists, where he served on the board of directors until 2009, and advisory roles with other significant medical societies.
Dr. Flam’s academic background reveals the foundation upon which his successful career was built. He received a bachelor’s degree in life sciences and molecular biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned his Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University. Dr. Flam’s postgraduate training included an internship and residency in internal medicine at NYU-Bellevue Hospital, a medical residency at the University of Colorado, a fellowship in clinical hematology at the University of Utah and a clinical oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston. Dr. Flam’s extensive academic achievements have been instrumental in his success across his career.
Dr. Flam served as a major in the United States Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas where he was chief of the division of hematology and oncology, an instructor in the school of health care sciences and has contributed to NASA’s Sky Lab astronaut training program. Dr. Flam was engaged in clinical oncology research throughout his 40 years of practice and received research awards including from the Northern California Oncology Group. Beyond his professional endeavors, he has participated in various civic-minded organizations and creative projects that reflect his diverse interests, including singing and performing with the California Opera Association (COA) of Fresno.
Following his retirement after 40 years of practice, teaching and clinical research in oncology and medicine he has pursued hobbies including tennis, skiing, singing on stage, and writing poetry. He has recently published a book of limericks entitled “Wordle Limericks”. His original limericks incorporate the word of the day in the internet game Wordle and are a blend of humorous, thought provoking, educational and inspiring poems. The motto of his book is “Laugh & Learn!”. He aspires to publish 9 volumes of limericks and transform education into an enjoyable experience for high school students by employing limericks as teaching tools. He is the father of five accomplished daughters and has nine grandchildren. His multifaceted career and personal endeavors highlight a life dedicated to advancing medical care and science and enriching the lives of others through community involvement, education and creativity. He resides in Fresno, California and Sun Valley Idaho with his retired pediatrician Chilean wife.
